📋 When to Use the Typing Speed Test
Use the Typing Speed Test to benchmark your words-per-minute before a job interview, track your typing improvement over time, compete with friends, or test a new keyboard. Students can practice for typing-heavy exams, developers can measure coding speed, and casual users can enjoy the gamified experience. Everything runs in your browser — no data leaves your device.
⚙️ How Typing Speed Test Works
The Typing Speed Test presents random words from a difficulty-based pool. When you start typing, the timer begins counting down. Each keystroke is compared against the expected character — correct keys appear green on the visual keyboard, mistakes flash red. WPM is calculated as (total correct keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ elapsed minutes. Accuracy is correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes. When time expires, your final score, emoji grade, and missed words are shown. All computation is client-side using JavaScript.
How to Use the Typing Speed Test
1. Select your difficulty and time limit. Choose Easy (short common words), Medium (longer words), Hard (mixed case + punctuation), or paste your own Custom text. Pick a time limit: 30s, 60s, 120s, or 300s.
2. Type the displayed words. Type the displayed words exactly as shown. The timer starts with your first keystroke. Watch the visual keyboard highlight each key green for correct and incorrect presses.
3. Monitor your live stats. Real-time WPM, CPM, accuracy percentage, and remaining time update as you type. Correct words disappear; incorrect words turn red.
4. Review and share your results. When time runs out, review your final WPM, CPM, accuracy, emoji speed grade, and words you missed. Share on X, copy results, then try again to beat your score.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is WPM calculated?
WPM (Words Per Minute) = total correct keystrokes ÷ 5 ÷ elapsed time in minutes. The standard 5-keystroke word convention is used. Only correctly typed characters count toward WPM; mistakes lower your accuracy but not directly the WPM figure.
What is a good typing speed?
The average typing speed is 40–60 WPM. Above 60 WPM is above average, 80+ is fast, and 100+ is considered excellent (professional typist territory). Accuracy above 95% is good; below 90% means you should slow down and focus on precision.
Can I use this on mobile?
Yes, but the experience is best on a physical keyboard. On mobile devices, use your on-screen keyboard. The visual keyboard display adapts to smaller screens, and the timer starts with your first keystroke whether on desktop or mobile.
Does this test save my data?
No. All typing data stays in your browser. Scores, keystrokes, and results are never sent to any server. You can clear your browser's local storage at any time to reset all stored preferences.
